Verena Stefania Grotto, a 22 year old Fashion Marketing and Communication student who works as a a fashion coordinater for Vice Magazine Spain and also established her reputation through her Barcelona Hunting-Blog (http://www.appealtotheeye.blogspot.com).
In the following interview Verena will talk about various fashion nowadays, how people react to it and how the whole scene might change over the next 20years.
How comes that you take pictures of people in the streets?
Well, I have to admit that everything started not because of me. Almost three years ago, I got this propose from DIESEL Italy to do some cool hunting from Barcelona. After a few months I found myself with so many pictures and decided to open a myspace account and upload them there.
I received many good comments, that convinced me to open a blog and try to update it almost every day or at least two times per week.
Besides I opened it because there wasn’t streetstyle blogs of Barcelona, so it was like an occasion for me to do something ‘new’, to be the first, you know?
And here I am, with my blog, and looking for something or somebody special to take Picture of, everyday along my way!!!!

What do I have to do to be on one of your pictures?
First I have to say: Don’t be a ‘magazine-wannabe’, with this expression I mean that I hate to see people that maybe have a cool style but they don’t have the personality to wear clothes like that, they’re cool just because they are typical people that look at the magazine and copy what they see without putting a bit of their selves or interpretation of what they see in it. Nowadays fashion isn’t something to see and copy, where there are musts and everybody’s going around wearing it in the same way. There’s no unique trend for each season like it happened during 60’s (with miniskirt for example)-70’s or 80’s.
The most beautiful thing about fashion in our time is that we have the possibility to play with fashion, to reinterpretate it and to make something really personal. At the end, what I look for in my picture?
Of course style, but also personality, I want to see the personality of the person, and the way how he/she wears clothes, shoes or a simple necklace, You have to communicate me something throughout your style, your body, your eyes and your movements!

Describe a general day!
Every Day is different from the others, it also depend from the period I’m living.Today I woke up hade my coffee (without a coffee I cannot be a person); then I do all my things, like going to the bank, or to the supermarket, and so on. During the afternoon after working a bit on my computer I go out to have a walk around, see shops, new staff, and to look for some good style shot, or some good photos to take in general. But when it’s a very busy period, I wake up very early and go to the university, studying a lot during the afternoon, and trying to match it with work, as a fashion editor for Vice Spain, looking for some good photographers, some ideas for next editos and so on…
Now I’m also into a music project, I’m a style assistant of a band from Italy and their Spanish manager in some ways.
Everything. It seems a stupid and too short answer but actually I try to get inspiration from everything, also from children playing in a street, or some lost bag flying around. Everything can inspire you in some way. But if you speak about fashion, well, I’m totally into fashion blogs, because I prefer to watch people and their ideas than catwalks.
But also from movies, old books, …
do you have any icons or favourite designers?
Well yes I have, many but of course there are some that stand out from the mess of names I have in my mind.
I love MARIOS, it’s an Italian brand, based on unstructured shapes of the clothes.
Then I love Scandinavian style, always simple but clean and chic. My fav Scandinavian brand is Acne Action, I’ve just bought a pair of shoes of that brand. Love them!
Then I also like something of FEBRUARY, and ARILL77. Most of mine are favourite brands not designers. Like for example VALENTINO, that’s not my style but his collections always have a special womanly style, girls are always so chic, and elegant, and feminine. Don’t know, if I start speaking about designers I cannot stop, so just stay with the first I said. Younger names!
what is your favourite trend of all the time?
Oh Gosh, let me think, well first I have to say: LEGGINGS. Of course it’s a great trends, that I’ve used in so many ways and still using it even if they say it’s dead.

what is the worst trend of all the time?
Shoulder pads! At all! But I think it’s because it doesn’t look so great on me, because of my swimmer shoulder, that I like!
But also very low tip trousers showing underwear everywhere. It’s so barbarous, and absolutely no chic.
In your opinion how will fashion scene change over the next 20years?
Wow, it’s not an easy question actually. Let me see, 20 years, it’s a long long time, I don’t even know if world will still exist in 20 years ; )
I don’t’ have a concrete idea but sure we’re going to have new textiles, stronger, but I don’t see so many new creation or new movements, not as much as we have had in these last 40 years.
what do you expect from your blog-visitors when they look at your photos?
I don’t expect anything. I learn day by day that I don’t have to have expectations from anything. So I just HOPE that they can understand what I’m doing, why I’m choosing those persons, and of course HOPE that they like it, and became fan of it.
what do you want to represent through your blog?
In some way I try to ‘present’ Barcelona style, that is also very different from other Spanish cities, as for example Madrid, or Valencia…
I always try to show some style, something that ‘appeals to the eye’, new ways of wearing something, new ways of loving something else.
But a part of Barcelona I try not to be classified just as a Barcelona blog, every time I have the opportunity to travel around,I have always my camera with me, even if I sometimes lose some good or special shot just for being ashamed or shy.
in your opinion, what does a good blog look like?
Like mine ; )
Kidding. Well, a good blog is one that is updated constantly, almost every day, and that has coherence in it, about style and ‘personality’.
I also like to see a good quality in the pictures.
what are your future plans?
Sure I’m moving to London for at least one year, to do THE London experience (I have already lived there but only for two months when I was 19( Before moving to Barcelona). Than… don’t know, trying to get what I dream for my future, to be the person I want to be and to get all the knownledges I want to have to become a good photographer, to have a good job I like. But for this shortime I want to make my blog more famous and try to get more and better shots. Ou, ou, ehm, yeah, and of course I want to get my diploma.
